Cley Calling - Summer Sea

Monday 24 July, 2017

Dive into summer and celebrate life beneath the waves on the North Norfolk Coast

This summer, you can explore North Norfolk’s coastal wildlife, landscape and culture as part of National Marine Week. From Thursday 3 August to Sunday 6 August, a variety of musical and theatrical performances and family events inspired by the sea will be hosted at Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Cley Marshes nature reserve to create a festival full of summer celebrations.

Some of the highlights of this coming weekend include:

Friday 4 August – Stolen Years: Guitarist James Boyd will tell the story of the Concord, a beautifully restored wooden boat dating from 1937. The music will range from the lute fantasias of John Dowland and the haunting writing of Benjamin Britten through to traditional music and sea songs, interwoven with poetry. Doors open 6pm with licensed bar and light meals, performance 7.30pm.

Saturday 5 August – Pimms, pizza & poetry: Enjoy a relaxing evening with Kevin Crossley-Holland, Matthew Howard, Jonathan Ward, Joanna Guthrie and Martin Figura as they read poetry inspired by the stunning North Norfolk coastline, its landscape wildlife and culture. Join us for a glass of Pimms and canapés (included in ticket price) at 6.30pm, followed by the readings at 7.30pm.

Sunday 6 August – Norfolk Girl: The Norfolk Girl is a chapter from The Mystery of the Mystery Mist, a children’s book by local author Karen Crane. Families will have the chance to bring the story to life in an interactive puppet performance, by recreating a stormy evening at sea in their own fishing boat. Morning performance 11am – 2.30pm, afternoon performance 2.30pm – 4pm.

And don’t forget to take a look at our underwater exhibition which is on display throughout the festival. A stunning photography exhibition will be showcased in the education centre, featuring images from Paul Sterry and Andrew Cleaves that bring to life the amazing creatures living in our seas.
