From The Chair

On behalf of the Norwich Group, it is my pleasure to have this opportunity to welcome anyone who is interested in the Group and its activities. It was the first local Norfolk Wildlife Trust group and was started in 1978, with Michael Baker, our Group President, as founder chairman.

Our purpose is to inform and educate, to enjoy the many aspects of Norfolk’s wildlife in the company of fellow enthusiasts, and to support our parent Trust in any way we can, through fundraising and volunteering.

You will see from the events calendar that we have regular outings and talks. The latter are currently held at the Alex Bussey Scout Centre, off Rowington Road, Norwich NR1 3RR. Talks take place monthly, except in the summer months, and attract an audience averaging 50 people. The committee endeavours to create a programme encompassing the diverse natural history interests of our members, calling on some of the best speakers in their subjects from within East Anglia to give local and occasional national updates and information.

You might be surprised at what you could learn at our talks, whether you are an expert or a beginner.

We are in need of new helpers to join our committee. Various roles are available, including Events Secretary. If you have skills which would be appropriate and would like to help our group please email the group at norwich@norfolkwildlifetrust.org.uk or telephone Jon Shutes, Chairman on 01263 735799

The City of Norwich does not at present include any of the Trust’s reserves, but members are welcome to become involved with the reserves through the Trust Volunteer Coordinator, based at Head Office.

The Group’s organised walks are extremely popular, and are open to members of all Norfolk Wildlife Trust groups. They consist of visits to major county wildlife sites such as Cley and Hickling. Norwich itself has many areas of great natural history interest, including parks, heaths, and a river system with extensive marshes, all of which have provided venues for us to explore. They still surprise us with their wide diversity.

So please consider joining us in our Local Group activities. We are always delighted to see new Trust members at our meetings, and we extend to you a very warm welcome.
