People’s choice Alice Lee will exhibit her unique ‘Flock’ at NWT Cley Marshes

Thursday 22 March, 2018

Norfolk Wildlife Trust is excited to host talented Norwich-based artist, Alice Lee for an exhibition, colouring book launch and workshop of her modern technical and intricate illustrations. ‘Flock’ will be at NWT Cley Marshes from Wednesday 4 to Tuesday 17 April, with the book launch on Wednesday 11 April.

Alice studied graphic design and animation at Norwich University of the Arts. She illustrates birds in a geometric-style, using circular shapes and monochrome textures. In 2015, Alice was nominated for the Visual Arts Award, and was shortlisted for the EDP People's Choice Award at the Norfolk Arts Awards.

She says of her style: “I was always striving to create a unique style. I had always been able to draw well free hand but found it frustrating that it was not particularly distinctive and lacked character. I was asked to do a drawing for a poem called Camera Bird by Helen Ivory for National Poetry Week, so I drew a bird constructed of camera parts. I needed it to look technical so I used a compass and a ruler to create the drawing. I really liked the outcome so I have continued drawing in that way!”

Cley Marshes Visitor Centre Manager, Ewan Carr, said: “We have been working with Alice on her new colouring book, which is suitable for all ages not just children. Together we’ve chosen flagship Norfolk birds including marsh harrier, bearded tit and pink-footed goose. These are all regularly spotted at Cley Marshes. We can’t wait for her workshop to launch the new book and to welcome people of all ages and skills to come and join in!”

On Wednesday 11 April, Alice is hosting a workshop in the education centre to celebrate the launch of her new book. Participants of all ages and skill levels are invited to come along to add their own splash of colour and personality to Alice’s drawings. The outcomes of the workshop will be compiled onto display boards to create an eclectic menagerie. The workshop will be running from 10.30am to 12.30pm, and from 2 to 4pm, on a drop-in basis.

Alice’s book, Flock, will be available to purchase from the Cley Marshes gift shop from Wednesday 4 April. RRP £5. Entrance to her exhibition and workshop is free. Use #flockincolour on social media to share your coloured images of Alice’s book.
