Take a peek into the world of our extremely talented volunteer chainsaw carving artist, Andy Usher.

Andy is a retired Police Sergeant and Cruise Ship Security Officer who is now a keen chainsaw carving artist.  He is a qualified chainsaw user and now creates carvings mainly to raise money for charity.

Andy has been chainsaw carving since January 2017 and when working as a volunteer for Fairhaven Gardens, South Walsham, Norfolk, he created the many wildlife carvings which form the popular ‘Our Perfect Planet’ and ‘Bear Trail’ within the gardens. Since May 2021 Andy has been working as a volunteer for Norfolk Wildlife Trust at the Trinity Broads Partnership and now creates carvings to raise money for the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. These carvings are mainly offered for sale at the Hickling Broad, Visitor Centre and at Tacon’s Farm Shop at Rollesby.

He has carved a large willow stump at Thurton & Ashby St Mary Preschool in their Forest School area. The ‘Gruffalo Tree’ is already proving popular with the children as is the new Bear Trail which was installed in early May 2023.

Andy has also created a Marsh Harrier carving which was donated to the Norfolk Wildlife Trust for permanent display at the Rollesby Broad viewing area. He has also donated an Otter carving to the NWT Visitor Centre at Ranworth and has carved a flying Bittern in oak which is on display ‘flying’ over the pond in the picnic area outside Hickling Broad NWT Visitor Centre.

Andy mainly uses five Stihl chainsaws for forestry work and for chainsaw carving. The four main saws used for carving are electric cordless which are quieter and more environmentally friendly.
