The 250 club is a small society lottery which gives 40% of its income in prizes and is established to donate the remainder towards Norfolk Wildlife Trust projects. Since its formation in 1981, members of the 250 club have raised more than £290,000 for NWT.

Our 250 Club lottery reached a significant milestone in 2021, celebrating its 40th anniversary, and over £290,000 has now been donated to the Trust. We use the funds as a Third Party Contributing payment to a Landfill Operator, meaning this incredible amount from the 250 Club has enabled us to unlock more than £2.6 million towards habitat restoration projects across Norfolk.

Dereham Wetlands

In recent years this has included restoration of two NWT valley sites, Rush Meadows and Scarning Fen, 2km apart along a small tributary of the Wensum called Wendling Beck, or locally, Dereham Stream. They are both SSSI and form part of a valuable ecological corridor for wildlife through the landscape. Donations from the 250 Club – and those subsequently unlocked from WREN via Landfill Communities Fund – helped us clear scrub from the open meadow habitat, plus helped us clear ditches and install water control sluices. The recovery of Rush Meadows has been so successful that we have recently been able to reintroduce British White cattle to graze the fen.

Breckland heath

NWT Thompson Common in the Brecks is one of the best places in Europe for beetles, with more than 600 species recorded, and one of only two UK sites where you can find northern pool frog. For many years, however, the site’s biodiversity has been threatened by excess nutrients seeping out of a neighbouring pig farm. We were recently able to buy the land and begin its restoration back to Breck grass heathland. With 250 Club-enabled funding from Biffa Award, we hope to reinstate previously-lost “ghost” pingos (ancient ponds) and clear scrub to improve the connection between the new land and the existing reserve.

Meet Amanda Morris

Amanda has been a member of NWT for several years and has recently become the 250 club volunteer promoter.

Amanda was a primary school teacher for many years and enjoyed seeing children develop a love of science and nature.

Amanda loves the outdoors and is a keen gardener, with most of her free time spent developing her own wildlife garden with her husband Lee, or walking their dogs and exploring Norfolk's coast and nature reserves. Amanda has a particular love of the Pink-footed Geese which visit Norfolk each winter.

"I am looking forward to running the NWT 250 club lottery in conjunction with NWT. It is lovely to be able to support the Trust in preserving Norfolk's wonderful wildlife habitats, both for the wildlife and for everyone to visit and enjoy."

There is real value in giving £12 per year for a chance to win, and a guaranteed win for local wildlife, too.

Farewell to Dick Wingate

At the end of 2021, we said a fond farewell to Dick Wingate, who was volunteer promoter for the 250 Club for 11 years. Dick's dedicated support working alongside Trust staff has led to significant improvements in the running of the 250 Club, and we held many memorable Draws together and even met some of our lucky winners. We thank Dick for all his hard work and enthusiasm.

Look out for articles in our March 2022 e-news and Summer 2022 Tern recognising Dick's amazing contribution and support, and marking the handover to Amanda.
