East Bilney Common is a stretch of deciduous wet woodland, scrub and fen, which
runs along the bottom and sides of a small valley. A clear stream bisects the site, flowing from north to south.
The upper middle section of the site has public access, and is owned by Beetley Parish Council. This area of wet carr woodland has alder, downy birch and sallow, and a lovely diversity of wildflowers – with sanicle, common spotted orchid, common twayblade, and water figwort. By the stream there are also patches of marsh marigold, hemp agrimony, watermint and bugle.
Other wildflower species growing across the site include bluebell, pignut, dog violet, enchanter’s nightshade, primrose, hedge woundwort, male fern and broad buckler fern.
Best time to visit
Springtime to midsummer will see most of the wildflowers at their peak, but there will be something special to spot throughout the year on this lovely wet woodland site.
