Poppy Survey

Group/Individual: Norfolk Wildlife Trust
Location: Countywide
As par of the People and Wildlife project NWT ran a poppy field survey with the aim of encouraging members of the public to report any fields full of poppies they encountered.

A survey form was created for this purpose and distributed to libraries, information centres and other public places throughout the county. Over 150 records were received from all over Norfolk which allowed a comprehensive distribution map to be produced. The survey showed that whole fields of poppies are more prevalent in the south of the county and surprisingly rare along the coastal strip between Overstrand and Sheringham – ironically named ‘Poppyland’!

We can be certain that today poppy fields are a much rarer sight than in the 1930s and 1940s.
