Red Admiral Vanessa atalanta

The red admiral butterfly is a welcome visitor to many a garden, bringing a splash of colour as it feeds on nectar. This beautiful black, white and orange butterfly can often be found feeding on bramble, ivy and privet and basking in the late summer sunshine.

The red admiral butterfly is not a species of conservation concern and has in fact been increasing in number recently.

Did you know? The caterpillar  of the red admiral butterfly lives within a tent which it forms by folding the edges of a leaf together. It emerges only to feed and as it grows bigger it will make a larger tent.
