Primrose primula vulgaris

The primrose in flower heralds the coming of Spring. They are popular in gardens but can be found in cool damp areas in woodland, near hedgerows or in coppice woodland.

Conservation status

Although the primrose is native to Britain, the hot dry summers since the 1970s have resulted in a decline in the incidence of primroses in East Anglia. This may be an indication of future of future decline.

Details

Did you know? 19 April is Primrose Day. The flower was a favourite of Benjamin Disraeli and Queen Victoria was said to send him bunches of them. The 19 April is the anniversary of Disraeli’s death and a bunch of primroses is placed on his statue near Westminster Abbey each year.

The name primrose derives from the Latin prima meaning first and rosa meaning rose – first rose of the year even though it is not a rose.
