Go on, give an ancient tree a hug…

Group/Individual: Norfolk Wildlife Trust
Location: Countywide
In 2008 NWT launched a Notable Trees of Norfolk survey.

People were asked to send in records of any trees that were so big that two adults could not join hands around the trunk. Over 230 records were sent in, which included an oak tree in East Wretham with a girth of 900cm and a sweet chestnut in Walsingham, measuring 840cm. All the records of this survey were forwarded to Norfolk Biodiversity Information Service and to Norfolk and Suffolk Heritage Tree Survey.

This approach was a fun way of involving the local community as no specialist equipment or wildlife knowledge was needed.
