Lady's bedstraw leaves, Thurne 1/2
Whooper swans with Thurne church by Ian Davis 2/2

St Edmund, Thurne

St. Edmund’s is a beautiful church located in the parish of Thurne. It is surrounded by agricultural land and is just off the long distance footpath called the Weaver’s Way.
A Broadland thatched village church situated conveniently near the boat moorings! The church has a 13th century tower and chancel; with the nave rebuilt in the 14th century and a new roof late 15th century. Further restoration work took place in the Victorian age. If you stand in front of the church tower and look eastward you can see St. Benet’s Abbey and fantastic view of grazing marshes, reedbeds and woodlands. Look at the tower and you will see a hole, this was where a candle was lit to signal to the monks at St. Benet’s Abbey.
The church has been part of Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s (NWT) Churchyard Conservation Scheme since 2005. It has been managed over the years with wildlife in mind, with bird boxes being erected and a mowing regime being introduced. There is one Conservation Area in the north of the churchyard, which is fenced off from the rest of the site.
Wildflowers to be enjoyed here include bluebells, primroses, germander speedwell, lesser celandine, ox eye daisy and Lady’s bedstraw.

Best time to visit
Springtime for the primroses and bluebells. Summertime for the other lovely wildflowers and insects.
