A large church reflecting the wealth of the population in C14 and C15 when the church was built to replace a smaller building. The tower and the chancel remain of the original church as the nave was rebuilt 100 years later in the early Perpendicular style with a tall clerestory (second storey with windows) supported on octagonal pillars and a hammerhead beam roof decorated with wheels, the symbol of St Catherine.
Wildflowers to be discovered at St Catherine’s include Lady’s bedstraw, sheep’s sorrel, pignut, ox eye daisy, germander speedwell, snowdrops, bulbous buttercup; ferns in the churchyard include black spleenwort on a tomb and hart’s tongue on the outside wall.
Best time to visit
Early springtime for the snowdrops; summertime for the insects, wildflowers and ferns.
