Hop to it – will you take up the 2.6 wildlife challenge?

Friday 24 April, 2020

Norfolk Wildlife Trust is asking the county’s nature lovers to join in the national 2.6 Challenge and raise money for Norfolk’s wildlife.

As part of the national campaign to help the UK’s charities, which are struggling during the pandemic and cancellation of thousands of fundraising events such as this weekend’s London Marathon, people are being asked to create their own challenge based around 2.6 or 26 (within government guidelines) and either make a donation or collect sponsorship.

Norfolk Wildlife Trust has suggested a range of wildlife-themed activities for children, families or wildlife fans to do from home: why not hop like a frog around your garden 26 times; search for 26 different insects; watch your garden birds for 2.6 hours and let NWT know what you recorded; or sketch 26 pictures of wildlife you have seen in your local area.

Two local children, Grace and Arlo have decided to take on the 2.6 Challenge in support of Norfolk Wildlife Trust. Their mum, Denise said: “Anyone who knows Grace and Arlo knows how much they love nature and animals, and they are both hoping to raise as much money as they can to support this local wildlife charity at this difficult time. On Sunday 26th April they will be baking 26 cupcakes, running round the garden 26 times, attempting to score 26 goals, skipping 26 times, attempting to get 26 arrows to hit the target in archery, and many more activities!”

The 2.6 challenge is calling all home heroes to help save UK charities

Chief Executive of Norfolk Wildlife Trust, Pamela Abbott said: “The Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant effect on NWT’s income, with the closure of our visitor centres and the cancellation of hundreds of events. The 2.6 challenge is linked with the Virgin Money London Marathon, which should have taken place on Sunday 26 April and is the world’s biggest one-day fundraising event. It raised more than £66.4 million for thousands of charities in 2019 and Norfolk Wildlife Trust is one of those to have benefitted from individuals running in our name.

“We are joining with the UK’s charities to ask for your support to raise funds. It would be fabulous if you would chose us as one of the charities if you are taking part. We are grateful for your donation, large or small, at this difficult time.”
