Songs, Scales and studies at Cley this summer

Wednesday 25 July, 2018

Don’t miss Cley Calling Summer Spirit next week - Thursday 2nd till Sunday 5th August – with unusual ways to discover and explore the wildlife of the north Norfolk coast.

We’ll be turning one of the bird hides at Cley into a giant pinhole camera and creating our own more portable pinhole cameras to capture photographs of wildlife on the reserve and curate an exhibition of our work. A two day workshop suitable for families. Tickets from £30, booking essential.

John Hinton will sing his ‘Ensonglopedia of Science’. A science-inspired song for every letter of the alphabet and each performed in a genre or on an instrument starting with the same letter. If you fancy some Big Bang body percussion or a drum’n’bass tribute to DNA, this show’s for you! Friday 3 August from 6pm, a licensed bar is available. Tickets from £10, booking essential.

Saturday night sees Toby Hay talk to the stage, performing his instrumental music inspired by the landscape, people and history of mid-Wales. An atmospheric addition to the long tradition of Welsh string music. Tickets from £12, doors from 6.30pm and food and bar available. Booking essential.

Bringing her new book Eye of the Shoal, Helen Scales comes to Cley Calling to destroy the myth that fish are brute, unthinking creatures and to enchant us with the watery secrets of their lives. She hopes to convince as many people as possible to become fishwatchers. Her pervious book Spirals in Time was one of the books of the year in the Guardian and The Times. Thursday 2 August, tickets from £10 including a pre-talk supper. Booking essential.

Regarding Nature Talks Programme

Norfolk Wildlife Trust has teamed up with Groundwork Gallery for Regarding Nature: a series of talks and workshops funded by the British Ecological Society. They are taking place at Cley Marshes visitor centre in August, and include
  • The Artist and the Science Friday 1 August 1.30 – 3pm: Dr Mark Spencer; forensic botanist and artist Chrystel Lebas discuss the Field Studies project in which Chrystel set out to travel and photograph in the footsteps of Sir Edward James Salisbury, ecologist and botanist and Director of Kew Gardens.
  • Our Changing Coastline Thursday 30 August time tbc: Julian Andrews & Andrew Watkinson, Professor of Environmental Science at UEA, will discuss how the Norfolk Coast is continuing to change. We will look at the impact this has had on the ecology of the coastal environment and how that affects what can be seen today.
  • Workshop on Coastal Vegetation – a Dynamic Flora Friday 31 August, 10.30am  to 3.30pm: Local specialist Simon Harrap will explore the ever changing flora of the North Norfolk Coast. How to identify key species and understand their place in the wider ecosystem.
There is a cost for sessions with a discount for NWT members. Booking is essential on 01263 740008 when further details will be provided.

Chief Executive of  Norfolk Wildlife Trust, Pamela Abbott hopes many people will come and enjoy the festival and education sessions in August: “Cley Calling Summer Spirit is a festival of creativity inspired by the natural world.  Each event in the festival reflects nature in a different way, through the eyes, the voice, the fingertips or the mind of a different artist. There is even more to this celebration of all things wild in North Norfolk and of the wild creativity of people faced with nature: guided walks; a beach clean; barbecue on the terrace; wildlife watching; the summer spirit strong at Cley Marshes.”

This is the third year of Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Cley Calling festivals. Full events listing and to book events where required  or call the NWT Visitor Centre at Cley on 01263 740008.
