Norfolk Wildlife Trust is holding a family fun day at its urban nature reserve,
NWT Thorpe Marshes on Sunday 29 July. The day is completely free, with no need to book – just turn up and join in!
There are activities for all ages, including guided walks, crafts and exploring for minibeasts. The day runs between 10.30am and 2.30pm.
Part of the
Water Mills & Marshes project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the event also marks 40 years of the
Norwich Local Group of Norfolk Wildlife Trust who will be celebrating this fantastic anniversary.
To complete your day, make sure you take a walk on the wild side with one of the NWT guided walks. There is no need to book – just turn up! The walks focus on butterflies, dragonflies and the general wildlife of this beautiful wetland; all of which promise to be as fascinating as they are engaging.
The nature reserve is found on Whitlingham Lane at the junction with Yarmouth Road in Norwich. Parking will be available at Hillside Avenue Primary and Nursery School, Hillside Avenue, Norwich NR7 0QW.
NWT Volunteer, Chris Durdin will be leading guided walks around the nature reserve. He said: “Little egret, green sandpiper, grasshopper warbler: all are attracted to water and wetlands. In the face of this summer’s drought, the lushness of a wetland nature reserve is a stark and attractive contrast to the dry lawns elsewhere. In high summer Thorpe Marsh is at its most colourful. The ditches are green with frogbit and water soldier, or white with the flowers of lesser water-parsnip and fool’s watercress.”
Thorpe Marshes is owned by the Crown Point Estate and managed by Norfolk Wildlife Trust. Fiona Sarson, Estate Manager, said; “We think this is a wonderful initiative and gives families a chance to interact with the unique landscape of The Broads. As an Estate we have always believed in preserving and supporting the natural landscape and have had a very strong and successful partnership with the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. We hope the day is a fantastic success and encourages people to engage and understand more about the natural environment.”
Come and discover Norfolk’s wildlife on one of NWT’s most beautiful reserves.
