Cley Calling celebrates Norfolk’s starry skies this weekend

Tuesday 05 December, 2017

Do you know your mallard from your gadwall? Do you fancy a spot of frosty storytelling with a glass of mulled wine? Yes, it’s Cley Calling time again, as Norfolk Wildlife Trust celebrates Norfolk’s winter skies with its final wildlife festival of the year.

Cley Calling - Winter Skies runs from Thursday 7 December to Sunday 10 December at NWT Cley Marshes on the north Norfolk coast. The events celebrate Norfolk’s many natural wonders and build on the success of the three previous festivals.

Our knowledgeable staff and volunteers are leading guided walks around the reserve and invite you to take a closer look at Cley’s wintering wildfowl. Saturday’s workshop Sound Recording, in partnership with National Trust, ties in a walk around the reserve with the rare chance to capture the sounds of Cley’s secretive residents such as bearded tits and bitterns, hiding away in the depths of reedbed.

The festival is concluded with a weekend full of family fun. On Saturday families can battle it out to see who can hand-make the most Christmas crafty creations using natural materials. On Sunday 10 December, the festival will come to close with some magical Storytelling by Paul Jackson, who will be reading a collection of stories to celebrate winter, entitled ‘When it’s so cold that words freeze in the air’. Paul has been storytelling for 24 years and is Chair of The Society for Storytelling, the national body that promotes storytelling. He has visited more than 2,000 schools nationally, impressing his audiences with his brilliant stories interwoven with the melodic tunes of the harp and flute. Wind down in the education centre with a glass of mulled wine or hot squash as Paul enchants us all with his seasonal stories.
