Orchid Cuckoo Bee microsculpture by Levon Biss

'Microsculpture'

Wednesday 15 March, 2017

'Microsculpture' is a unique exhibition resulting from a ground breaking insects project by Levon Biss, British photographer and Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.

Levon Biss' passion for photography and nature have come together to create 'Microsculpture' where insect specimens from Oxford University Museum of Natural History are presented like never before.

Levon Biss said, “The natural world is an endlessly inspiring and hugely rewarding subject to photograph.  The intricate beauty of these tiny creatures never ceases to amaze me and this drives me forward to capture images that showcase their hidden splendour in all its glory.”

A series of images reveal an unexpected and often breathtaking beauty and make visible the many intricate adaptations to the form of insects – what entomologists call their microsculpture. This series of beautifully-lit, high magnification portraits captures the microscopic form of insects in striking high-resolution detail. Each individual insect portrait is created from a composite of over 8,000 separate images.

Peter Antoniou, Country Manager for Swarovski Optik said, “We’re delighted to be sponsoring this stunning exhibition.  Levon’s ground breaking images are incredibly detailed works of art. This is a unique opportunity to view these colourful insect specimens close up and admire their sculptural beauty.”

These spectacular Microsculpture images will be on display in an exhibition sponsored by Swarovski Optik in the Simon Aspinall Wildlife Education Centre at Norfolk Wildlife Trust's Cley & Salthouse Marshes Reserve.  From Saturday 1 April to Tuesday 2 May 2017, 10am to 5pm, entrance free.
  • Friday 31 March exclusive Microsculpture launch evening and talk.  On the launch evening, there will be exclusive access to this fascinating photographic exhibition and the photographic artist, Levon Biss will reveal how these images are created with his unique photographic technique.  Doors at 6.45pm, talk at 7.30pm.  NWT Members £10, non-members  £12  - booking essential on 01263 740008.
