An Anthology for the Changing Seasons

Thursday 25 August, 2016

Continuing this series of seasonal anthologies published in conjunction with The Wildlife Trusts

From bestseller lists to blogs, environmental writing is flourishing. Melissa Harrison’s bold curation serves to capture nature writing at its most exciting and diverse, including fresh new voices alongside many of our best loved writers.

Specially commissioned new work includes a piece from Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Wildlife Evangelist, Nick Acheson, about September in Norfolk:

“There is a sorrow to September, a space left in the sky by the swifts. Plants and grasses, gold with summer’s sun, are tousled now by the first of autumn’s storms. Even September’s songsters speak of sadness. Silent since the spring the robins start again their tragic trickle of a song, telling of winter’s coming. From the autumn-tangled stands of bramble come the introspective chirps of dark bush-crickets.”

This and other contributions by new writers, who offer a fresh diversity of perspectives and a snapshot of autumn in Britain today, are found side by side with the great naturalists and classic extracts from Ted Hughes, Helen Macdonald and Nan Shepherd.

Autumn is available to purchase from all NWT Visitor Centres.
