From The Chair

On behalf of the Norwich group it is wonderful to have the opportunity to say hello and welcome to anyone interested in the group and its activities. The group’s committee arranges a programme of monthly talks and organises a number of walks in different parts of the county. Considering the large number of Trust members living in the Norwich area the audiences for our talks are quite modest, normally about 50, and it would be good to see some new faces. During the evening there is a tea break when there is the opportunity to exchange news, find answers to questions and make new friends.

As the outgoing chairman of the group I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the committee, the helpers and walk leaders for their contributions over the years, and wish all those who attend our events an enjoyable time.
Former chairman Quentin Mair

Our Local Area

The Norwich group does not have any of the Trust’s reserves within the immediate vicinity of the city. The group’s organised walks are arranged at locations throughout our large county but sometimes explore one of the local sites. Norwich is blessed with many green spaces, including a number of parks and several old cemeteries that are of considerable natural history interest. Situated in a river valley there is marshland and water meadows on the fringe of the city, and Mousehold Heath within easy walking distance of the city centre.

About the GroupThe fundraising Duck Race!

The Norwich group has the distinction of being the first of the local groups to be formed, having the first meeting in 1978. Over the years several different venues have been used for indoor meetings with the current venue being St.Albans Hall on Grove Walk close to the Trafford Arms junction on Grove Road. The evening meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month from September to May. A number of walks are arranged throughout the year, both at weekends and during the week, exploring the natural wonders of our county and occasionally taking the opportunity to visit areas only accessible to organised parties.

Members from the group have the opportunity to support the Trust’s activities at shows and other events in and around the city. Though the emphasis of the Norwich group is on talks and walks, over the years there have been many different fundraising events including very successful Duck Races on the River Wensum. There is a core of regular attendees at our meetings but obviously newcomers are welcome, and the forthcoming programme of talks has a variety of subject matter to suit different interests.

30th Anniversary Celebrations Celebratory cake, iced by Ann Thomson

The Norwich Local Group proudly celebrated its 30th Anniversary by adding Birthday Cake to the ever-popular Christmas Buffet Supper,. This year’s was very well attended as, apart from the food and traditional punch, John Snape was showing ‘Ted Ellis, a Free Spirit’ one of the films on his new DVD.

Founder members of the Group, Rebecca Tuddenham and Michael Baker cut the cake, and Janet Ede (a former Chairman) dissected the cake so that all 60 members and friends attending the supper could have their share. Supper, film and cake made for a most successful (and fundraising) evening!
