Geographic Information Systems

With so much ecological work being map-based, the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS)digital mapping, represents an excellent way to visualise and analyse data and GIS software is used routinely for our contracts. We have extensive experience of GIS work including:

  • Spatial data analysis including scripting and querying using Access, MapBasic and SQL to allow full documentation.
  • The interpretation and digitisation of maps and aerial photogaphs to create GIS datasets
  • Data conversion between GIS formats such as ArcInfo as well as mapping from Access, Excel, Word and text files to allow the use of existing data and the sharing of results with clients
  • The design and maintenance of normalised database systems
  • Creating "stand-alone" digital maps using Adobe Acrobat, MapView©, et al to allow visualisation for clients without GIS capacity or who wish to distribute data amongst other parties on CD
  • Exporting GIS maps to a CAD format to allow for their use by landscape architects and designers
  • Plotting of datasets with existing map co-ordinates such as historical records of plant distributions
