Present planned courses

The following one day courses are designed as introductions to their subjects. They are suitable for anyone interested in the topics they cover, whether professionally or personally. No experience is necessary to join a course. Learning on the courses will be by a mixture of classroom and outdoor based learning.  All courses are for between 6 and 12 participants.

An introduction to managing hedgerows for wildlife through hedgelaying.
Tutor Kevin Parker, Thursday 8th December 2011,

10am to 3pm, Bergh Apton, Norfolk.
£50.00 + V.A.T; £40.00 + V.A.T for concessions.
This is one of a number of planned training events for people who have a few acres that they want to manage for wildlife.

Hedgerows have been a part of the landscape of the British Isles since early times. As well as being attractive field boundaries and historic environment features, they provide habitats for a rich variety of bird, plant and animal species.

This one-day course is an introduction to the management of hedgerows for wildlife, primarily through hedge laying. It will focus on this traditional technique, starting with an illustrated talk, followed by a discussion and site visits with practical demonstrations. No prior knowledge is needed.

An outline of what grants are available for hedge management, or planting of new hedgerows, will also be covered.

Skills for small woodlands; an introduction to coppicing.

Previous courses

Introduction to water voles, ecology and legislation

Friday 16th September 2011, 10:00 a.m. to approximately 4:30 p.m.

Course Leader: Paul Gambling, Ecological Consultant
Location: Old Court House, Baron’s Close, Fakenham, NR21 8BE (the home of the Norfolk Coast Partnership)
Cost: £60 + V.A.T; £30 + V.A.T for concessions

Course Content:

In the morning there will be an introduction to water voles and their ecology, including lifecycle, habitats, food, predators, the problems they face, reasons for population decline, interaction with their latest predator the American Mink, and current legislation. After lunch there will be a practical field session including an introduction to surveying techniques and recording forms, equipment, safe surveying, identifying water vole field signs, and identifying potential water vole habitat. The course will be held at an intermediate level and is suitable for ecologists, planners, land managers/owners, and anyone with an interest in water voles.
