Cley to Salthouse

Welcome to the Cley to Salthouse Living Landscape pages. With the help of the information here, we hope that you will gain greater enjoyment and meaning from your exploration of the diverse, beautiful and biologically important habitats of the living landscape, the wild creatures which inhabit them, and the nature reserves in which they are protected. Almost nowhere else in the UK is such a diversity of terrestrial, freshwater and coastal habitats squeezed into so small a geographical area.
The jewel of the living landscape is NWT Cley Marshes, oldest nature reserve in the county Wildlife Trusts movement, whose purchase in 1926 catalysed the formation of Norfolk Naturalists’ Trust, the first county Wildlife Trust. To its east lies NWT Salthouse Marshes, quieter and less explored but of equal importance to wildlife. At the top of an Ice Age ridge, just inland from the coast, lie two of North Norfolk’s most important and beautiful heather heaths and up the Glaven River a third heath, Holt Lowes, is embraced by the woods and conifer plantations of Holt Country Park.
These protected areas and the land surrounding them hold a remarkable range of habitats: fen, a chalk river, grazing marsh, reedbed, scrape, heather heath, hedgerow, deciduous woodland, garden, farmland, coastal shingle, saltmarsh and tidal pools. As a result the living landscape is home to a huge range of species and is among the most popular wildlife-watching destinations in the UK.
