When to see - October
An active month for both plants and animals. Summer migrants are replaced by winter migrants, as thrushes arrive from Scandinavia, Germany and Russia. Fungi, in many different shapes and colours, erupt from the ground and of course, trees begin to change colour, bringing a warm glow to the countryside.

Things to do in October
Make a nest box - birds will be attracted to your garden if there are places to nest. Sparrows like thick hedgerows; walls covered by climbers are attractive to blackbirds, thrushes and spotted flycatchers and the eaves of your house are popular with swallows, house martins and swifts. You can also put up nest boxes, to increase the number of nesting sites in your garden.
If you think you’ve found a harlequin ladybird then please send a record of your sighting to the Harlequin Ladybird Survey at the University of Cambridge. You can do this either online at www.harlequin-survey.org or by posting the details to Ladybird Research Group, University of Cambridge, 219d Huntingdon Rd, Cambridge, CB3 | | |
