Information on this local group

From The Chair

Welcome to all who read these comments on this Group!

The pattern of our year is that from October to April, on the first Tuesday of each month, we hold an indoor meeting in Dereham. The topics and presentations vary, sometimes being quite specialised while at other times being of a more general nature.

Outdoor summer events include a fund-raising stall held in Dereham early in May, and a number of guided walks, usually about one each month, at place of interest within reasonable travelling distances.
An activity which is unique to this Group is the Hoe Bird Walk; every month (the 3rd Sunday) for about 30 years observers have recorded the bird life in the Hoe Common area. All are welcome to join this group of enthusiasts!

Details of all theses events may be found in the NWT's What's On events leaflet or by contacting Jacquie Fenn on 01362 697783 or Arthur Smith on 01362 668494.

You will be welcomed at one or all of them, but bear in mind that if there is a restriction on numbers then it's first come first served.

Our Local Area

Dereham is situated at the centre of the County, so our Group is well named!

There are a number of relatively small NWT nature reserves in this area: Hoe Rough, Honeypot Wood and Scarning Fen, with Foxley Wood and Thursford Wood being near its margin.

The River Wensum flows through this region and a number of areas of past and present sand and gravel extractions provide some interesting habitats. Lengthy footpaths are few and far between in this area, although quiet country lanes are almost as good.

About the Group

The main aims of the Group are

  • to provide opportunities for interested people to gather, socialise and hear talks by those more expert on particular topics
  • to encourage all age groups to visit places of importance to wildlife conservation and biodiversity
  • to raise funds for use by NWT HQ.
