Anglian Water
Aims
Annual vegetation monitoring of valley fen SSSIs within Norfolk in relation to boreholes
In 1994 baseline data was collected as the beginning of long-term annual monitoring for the effects of groundwater abstraction at five sites in Norfolk. This monitoring forms the 13th time of annual recording at two of the sites, the 11th at one site and the 6th at the two remaining sites.
The aim of the project is to:
- Continue monitoring carried out in previous years using Common Standards Monitoring
- Review the existing work carried out on hydrological monitoring at the sites and where appropriate modify the existing methodology
Common Standards Monitoring is a standard methodology used by Natural England to assess the favourable status of the site. This provides a subjective broad-brush approach and fits within an accepted national framework. In addition it is the method NE would use to assess the condition of the site independently of this monitoring programme. Features assessed can be slightly tailored to each site and give a method to flag-up issues of concern and incorporate management. Key species can be incorporated within this.
